A virtual private server (VPS) is a virtual machine sold as a service by a hosting provider. You’ll often hear VPS referred to as a “cloud servers.” VPS servers appeal to those who want the best of both the dedicated servers and shared hosting environments. A single physical server can run multiple virtual servers—each VPS is isolated from the others. Customers have complete control over the VPS from the operating system up, and they can install almost any software that run on that OS.

 

A VPS is typically priced significantly lower than an equivalent physical server, and it can offer the availability, scalability of a shared hosting service. While VPSs running on the same physical server are isolated from one another, it is, however possible for the workload on one to affect the performance on the other.
Managed or Unmanaged
The biggest difference between VPS hosting packages is whether the VPS is managed or unmanaged. With a managed VPS, the hosting provider will install, configure, and manage everything from the OS to databases and applications, including applying software patches and performing regular backups. With an unmanaged VPS, you manage the virtual machine directly, performing all the aforementioned jobs all by yourself. If you know you can take on the management tasks, considering going with an unmanaged VPS and save some money. If you don’t, then go for the convenience of having the hosting provider manage your VPS and pay a bit more.
Resources
It’s important to figure out your server requirements before the initial install of your VPS. Many hosting providers will give you access to a control panel where you can dial in the values for RAM, CPU, and storage. You’ll pay by the resources you allocate whether you use them or not, so make sure you use them! Some VPS providers will charge for bandwidth, so pay attention to this, too.
Technical Support
One major factor that sets VPS providers apart is the competency of their technical support staff and the ways in which you can reach that staff. Make sure that the company offers multiple methods of communication, such as live chat, email, and telephone. Do not be tempted to save a few bucks by accepting support offerings that are below your needs. The first time you have a problem with a mission-critical business system you’ll realize that a good support program is worth every penny.
